Vending machines in Japan are as commonplace as temples, bicycles, and karaoke booths. It's not uncommon to see a street lined with a dozen or more machines selling products ranging from cold and hot drinks to flowers or rice. And almost none of these vending machines are vandalized or non-functional. According to the Vending Machine Manufacturers Association, Japan has one vending machine for every 23 people.

日本の自動販売機はお寺や自転車、カラオケボックスと同じくらい平凡な物です。コールド/ホットなドリンクから花やご飯までの製品を売る１ダース以上の自動販売機が通りに並んでいるのを見るのは珍しいことではありません。そして、ほとんどの自動販売機は解体されたり壊れていることはありません。自動販売機製造業組合によると、日本には23人に1台の割合で自動販売機があります。

It drives me crazy that we don't have vending machines with hot drinks here in the US. There's nothing better than walking to work on a cold winter morning in Tokyo and hitting up a vending machine for a hot can of coffee. Granted, the coffee in Japan is absolutely terrible, the vending machine type particularly so, but it's still a great way to warm up in the morning. They even have a canned corn soup that's fairly common. But here, the only options are cold soft drinks. Not a very friendly choice when it's 45 degrees out! Cmon and catch up America! We want some crazy vending machines too!
